Supercomputers track human genome
Article Abstract:
Celera Genomics acquired Paracel Inc. in June because of the latter's powerful supercomputers, which are extremely useful for analyzing the mountains of data from the Human Genome Project. Paracel's GeneMatcher computer was built especially for use in genomic research. It has 7,000 processors well-suited to the work of matching character strings, and can search at the rate of 30 million characters a second. Paracel's main competitor is TimeLogic, which is expected to soon announce that its machines will be distributed by Sun Microsystems.

Sensor fish brave the bumps to tame dams for young salmon
Article Abstract:
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has developed a fake salmon device with sensors to measure what young salmon experience when they try to survive the Columbia and Snake Rivers' hydroelectric dam turbines. The fake fish are six inches long and have accelerometers that document water turbulence, pressure changes and shearing forces to determine if recent turbine innovations are effective in preventing the destruction of the salmon.

Growing PC's into supercomputers, all in a row. (clustering computers)
Article Abstract:
Computer engineers have discovered that it is much cheaper to link many PCs into a parallel processing cluster than it is to build a stand-alone supercomputer. Programmable gate array chips allow the PCs to be fine-tuned to increase processing power. These chips can be reconfigured to customize data processing procedures while maintaining high performance.
