HMOs take spiritual approach
Article Abstract:
Health maintenance organizations are diversifying further into alternative medicine in the hope of developing low-cost methods for increasing patient satisfaction. For example, a Denver, CO-based health plan is offering spiritual counseling for $10 a visit for six visits. Blue Shield of California, on the other hand, is offering free audio-cassettes for patients that will undergo surgery, who desire to harness their imagination to promote healing.

HMO: future will see new cost controls
Article Abstract:
Managed care premiums are expected to rise 10% to 13% in 2001 for larger employers or 20% or more for smaller employers. The projected increase is prompting employers to look beyond managed care for the next evolution in cost control. As the US enters the post-managed-care era, health costs will remain paramount. However, a solution to rapidly growing spending may remain elusive even as some employers are moving into new kinds of health insurance coverage.

HMO love affair over?
Article Abstract:
Health maintenance organizations (HMO) are losing the faith of many employers, which have ceased to see managed care as a less expensive alternative to traditional insurance. HMOs have been favored at the beginning of the 1990s, but have received recent criticisms such as inflexible health plan rules and poor customer service. Industry experts believe that managed care plans should evolve to regain the trust of members.
