Motorola says it may post quarterly loss, first in 15 years

Motorola stunned analysts with the announcement of a planned first quarter loss, after having predicted a $250 million profit. Orders and sales were down for semiconductors and cellular phones and Motorola blamed a sagging U.S. economy and inventory overload. The company might close 4 more plants, after closing 6 within 8 weeks. Seeing the stock price fall 75% in 2000, the company admits it needs work on cost structure, but noting that the broadband unit is doing better.

Hynix to shut chip plant in Oregon for 6 months

Hynix Semiconductor plans to shutdown a plant in Eugene, Oregon due to a plummet in sales of semicontuctor devices in the past year. Park Chong Sup, CEO, says that the constant deterioration of the semiconductor industry has caused losses exceeding $100 million for the concern.

Chip maker in Korea is battling over loan
Article Abstract:
Foreign creditors, including the South Korean branch of French banking firm Societe Generale, are asking financially-troubled Hynix Semiconductor to repay its $46 million debt early in order to prevent a default on its loan agreement. Hynix got the loan while it was still part of the conglomerate Hyundai group and the loan agreement specified that Hyundai remain the 'largest and controlling shareholder.' Now Hynix, no longer part of Hyundai, is looking to South Korean banks for $3 billion in stock swaps and loans.
