IBM exec describes 'vicious cycle.'
Article Abstract:
IBM's John Soyring testified that Microsoft's self-perpetuating Windows software monopoly virtually thwarts competitors to step in. Microsoft responded, in the on-going antitrust hearing, that IBM might just have taken missteps in competing with Microsoft during the 1990s when the playing field was more level and IBM was leader in the industry. Soyring said that what happened was a vicious cycle, in which developers created software for the more in-demand Windows, which becomes more popular, thus spurring more creation of Windows-based applications.

Settlement unlikely as feds consider options
Article Abstract:
Microsoft may be forced by the US government to license its Windows source code if it loses its anti-trust case. Experts also expect the government to stop the software giant from leveraging its Windows monopoly on desktop computers into growth markets such as cable TV set-top boxes and hand-held devices. A settlement appear an unlikely possibilty considering the hardline stance both sides have been exhibiting.
