Murdoch doubles stake in Gemstar

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp became the biggest shareholder in Gemstar-TV Guide International after it acquired Liberty Media's stake for $6.4- billion worth of its own stock. The deal increases Liberty's stake in News Corp to 18% as well as getting a 4.75% stake in Sky Global Networks. The acquisition allows Gemstar to deploy its program guides on News Corp's set-top boxes around the world. The guides function as on-screen portal for video-on-demand, games and other interactive services.

MP3 ordered to pay $250M for copyright violation
Article Abstract:
MP3.com has been ordered to pay as much as $250 million for violating US copyright laws. The decision, handed down on Sep 6, 2000, by US District Judge Jed Rakoff in New York, directed the Internet-based company to pay $25,000 for every CD that it copied and downloaded from Universal Music Group. MP3.com, which vowed to appeal the ruling, has managed to reach a settlement with four of the five original music companies that filed a lawsuit against it.
