Icahn could be fly in airline deal ointment
Article Abstract:
Corporate raider Carl Icahn could sour up any acquisition plans American Airlines may have on Trans World Airlines (TWA). In exchange for refinancing Icahn's debt, TWA allowed Icahn to buy an unlimited number of tickets for flights that do not begin or end in St Louis, MO, at 45% below the published rates until Sep 30, 2003. As such, Icahn still exerts an enormous influence on TWA through his monopoly on discount ticketing on well-travelled routes, such as New York-Los Angeles or New York-San Francisco.
