Infant mortality in the nation's capital
Article Abstract:
Washington, DC, suffers the highest incidence of infant mortality among US cities. The capital's infant mortality rate of 26 deaths per 1,000 births even outpaces that of the nation which is 9.8 deaths per 1,000 births. Major contributory factors to the situation include low birthweight, poverty, inadequate nutrition and insufficient prenatal care. The city government has instituted programs to solve the problem and it is banking on the help of the national government for additional funding and incentives.

A little "Baby Love" goes a long way in North Carolina
Article Abstract:
North Carolina has an economic incentive program for low-income pregnant women. Created in 1987 and called 'Baby Love,' the program caters to the large segment living under the poverty line, mostly blacks, and provides coordinated prenatal care. It enables pregnant women to access services of welfare and health agencies and facilitates coverage under the federal Medicaid program. By 1991, 19,000 pregnant women in the state have been covered by the program.

The mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Article Abstract:
The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome more popularly known as crib death is considered one of the top causes of deaths among babies in the US. The incidence is higher among black infants. Several theories on causes include low birthweight resulting from premature delivery, inadequate prebirth care and cigarette smoke. There have been indications, however, that many crib deaths arise because of child abuse from babysitters.
