Internet squeeze play
Article Abstract:
Infoseek and Snap have teamed up with Walt Disney and NBC respectively, in a move expected to provide both portal firms with money to promote their sites. Meantime, highly-valuated Yahoo and Excite have been left out in the cold following the spate of mergers between big media firms and other Internet directory services known as portals. The negotiations are still going on as CBS is reportedly talking to mid-tier player Lycos while Disney announced that its Netcenter portal may be subject of a takeover. The speculation has caused Netscape Communications' stock to rise by 10% after Disney bought a 43% stake in Infoseek. The events may determine who the major players in the portal industry will be five years from now, according to analyst Chris Charron of Forrester Research.
