It still pays to increase your word power
Article Abstract:
Standalone electronic thesauri can be helpful for writers who need more than the 220,000 words found in most thesauri built into word processing programs. Microlytics' $59.95 Word Finder Plus offers over a million synonyms, defining 50,000 online. It comes in Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh versions, and works with many word processing programs to automatically replace highlighted words. Microlytics also sells the $49.95 Berlitz Interpreter, an online foreign language dictionary that automatically displays foreign synonyms for 12,000 words in English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Interpreter also displays each word's part of speech and gender, and can quiz users on their own translation ability. While multimedia electronic encyclopedias require CD-ROM drives, Microlytics' text-only $99.95 Random House Encyclopedia for Windows employs compression technology to offer 20,000 entries containing 1.5 million words of text. It comes on three floppy disks and takes up 4.2 Mbytes of hard disk space.

The home weatherman
Article Abstract:
Mindscape Inc's $49.95 Weatherbrief software package enables users to obtain up-to-the-minute weather data from the Weatherbank database. The program allows users with a modem to connect to the database and receive much the same information that professional forecasters use. Weatherbrief features over 300 search topics for users to choose from before connecting with the database. The topics include information about general weather in a given location, or more detailed information about hang-gliding conditions, farming news, as well as boating and flying conditions. Using Weatherbrief's options before connecting with the Weatherbank reduces on-line costs.
