Junk-filled air bags pose threat
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of US drivers are being duped by a new type of fraud involving air bags. Unscrupulous mechanics are not replacing air bag mechanisms after crash crashes, but are instead stuffing the deployed air bags with old rags, foam peanuts, old tennis shoes or beer cans, while charging customers up to $3,000 for the 'repair.' The problem is escalating at an alarming rate. Law enforcement officials say that it is difficult to track down the culprits since most cars with phony air bags are used vehicles with a history of multiple owners.

They add that the energy crisis might happen during the middle of the winter of 2000, at a time when the need for heat is at its greatest. Energy Sec Bill Richardson said oil prices were unusually high and that Pres Clinton may announce a decision to use some of the US' emergency oil reserves.

Study: road construction won't give relief
Article Abstract:
A report by the Surface Transportation Policy Project showed that some of the huge and costly road construction projects will save commuters just 30 seconds when they are completed. The study also showed that motorists are losing more time in roadwork that they will save driving on the improved roads. In addition, increased traffic volume will only offset the improvements made by roadwork.
