Law society sides with lawyer in YBM case

A legal battle between Newton, Penn.-based YBM Magnex International Inc. and its former counsel, Lawrence Wilder, may be joined by the Law Society of Upper Canada. The law society has filed papers with the Ontario Superior Court to intervene in the case, which revolves around the right of the Ontario Securities Commission to discipline lawyers.

Toronto Dominion Bank, which has been prohibited to appeal the case by the Supreme Court of Canada, has been ordered to pay a former vice-president over $2 million in a wrongful dismissal case. John Schumacher, who won the case in an Ontario court, was awarded $1.7 million in addition to interest and court costs.
