Lower imports boost November trade surplus
Article Abstract:
Canada's trade surplus climbed to C$1.9 billion in Nov 1998, from a revised C$1.7 billion in Oct 1998. Total exports dropped by 0.1% to C$28.4 billion, while imports declined by 0.8% to C$26.5 billion during the period. The decline in exports was mainly due to the 12% drop in the exports of energy products, particularly crude oil, while the drop in imports was attributed to the 2.6% reduction in purchases of foreign machinery and equipment. The overall trade surplus is projected to reach less than $20 billion in 1998, down from more than C$24 billion in 1997 and C$42 billion in 1996.
