The newly elected Chairman of Massachusetts Financial Services (MFS) Co., Robert Pozen, dismissed a U.S. regulatory probe into the mutual fund firm as 'very weak'. Pozen described the regulator's position as disingenuous, although the SEC has proposed to crack down on the deals and is responsible for the proliferation of soft dollars in the mutual fund industry.

No merger guidelines for banks until fall: Goodale

Finance Minister Ralph Goodale has announced that there will be no release of the revised merger guidelines for banks by Ottawa on account of the elections. Many industry watchers believe the uncertainty about domestic mergers has effectively paralyzed the banks, and prevented them from pursuing larger acquisitions in the US.
