Article Abstract:
Megawati Sukarnoputri is emerging as a strong contender in Indonesian Presidential politics. Her speech at the PDI conference in Bali in Oct 1998 showed her defining herself. She supports an open market and promises to invest in technology meaningful to the low income people. The downward spiral of the Indonesian economy and growing disenchantment with current President Habibie improve Megawati chances in the 1999 elections.
