Several provincial colleges of physicians and and surgeons are investigating doctors who practice alternative therapies. The medical colleges say they are trying to protect the public from incompetence, but some of the doctors being investigated say the colleges are seeking to retain market dominance.

An estimated 6% of Canada's population suffers from asthma, and some 500 died in 1994 from asthma-related complications. Still, advances in asthma treatments allow most asthmatics to lead uncomplicated lives. Three-fifths of all asthma cases are hereditary.
