Manulife expected to launch share buyback

Manulife Financial Corp, the second Canada-based mutual insurance company that went public, would spend almost C$400 million to purchase back 23 million shares in a move that is anticipated to be effected in early Nov 1999. Up to C$1.5 billion in 'excess' capital could be freed up by the company if it were to reduce its regulatory capital levels to that of its rivals including Waterloo, Ontario-based Clarica Life Insurance Co and Great-West Life Company Inc.
