Mending a broken heart
Article Abstract:
Australian doctors diagnose about 15 fetuses every month with aortic stenosis, a precursor condition to hypoplastic left heart syndrome caused when the aortic valve and the cardiac chamber stop growing. A routine ultrasound that revealed the condition in one fetus led doctors and parents to attempt a ground-breaking operation never before attempted in Australia, an experimental procedure that aimed to fix the unborn child's heart and this attempt was proved successful.
