The desertion of Dili
Article Abstract:
Australia's decision to withdraw its peace-keeping troops from East Timor in 2005 turned out to be a mistake as six months later, the fledgling nation saw the first major outbreaks of dissent. The decision was against the recommendation of the UN as well as East Timor's government, which argued that further military assistance would maintain security and help the development of judicial and administrative systems and a national police force.

Article Abstract:
The Australian Labor Party hopes the passage of the Goods and Services Tax, and Prime Minister John Howard's coalition with the Democrats, will prove to be politically beneficial to Labor in the next federal election. Labor believes much of the GST will be unpopular with Australian people. Labor can create a platform to repeal unpopular aspects and gain political advantage over Howard and the Democrats.

Time is ticking to show some GST ticker
Article Abstract:
Australia's prime minister John Howard set up a committee to examine the proposed goods and services tax (GST), and the report supports the government's position. The evidence brought out before the committee was important, even if it did not influence the committee's recommendations. Economists opposed to the GST are concerned old-age pensions could lose value.
