The proposed merger of Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International Ltd would likely encounter rough sailing, said observers. Differences in fleets and corporate culture are just among the problems that need to be addressed, said observers. The C$1.8 billion merger is being pushed by Onex Corp, which wants to buy the weaker Canadian Airlines and merge it with the relatively healthy Air Canada.

Van Houtte brews a one-cup hit

Montreal, Quebec-based Van Houtte Inc. has received a strong response from consumers for its single-cup gourmet coffee-dispensing machine. Van Houtte, which is led by president and chief executive officer Paul-Andre Guillotte, reported $18.7 million in profits on revenues of $250.3 million for the year ended April 1, 2000.
