Microsoft says PC business will worsen; but operating results were firm last quarter

Microsoft reports a revenue increase of 13% to $6.58 billion and an operating income rise of eight percent to $2.75 billion in the quarter ending June 30, 2001. The company also estimates revenue of $6-6.2 billion for the quarter ending Sep. 30, 2001. CFO John Connors says that he expects the PC market (with only a seven percent growth in the quarter ending June 30, 2001) to slow even further in the coming quarter.

PC makers and Microsoft squabble over desktop icons

Microsoft Corp. claims it will give computer makers more freedom to place services of its rivals on its Windows XP operating systems but the leniency is pretty rigid. For example, if a computer maker wants to display the icon for AOL's Internet browser on Windows XP, it must also include three other icons for Microsoft products and/or services.
