The Australian mining industry, in an effort to enhance its status and political influence, has instituted new environmental policies reflecting an attitude of cooperation and community responsibility. The Minerals Council of Australia's president, David Stewart, talks of developing cooperative relationships with both environmentalists and Aborigines, yet some community members worry the MCA's voluntary code lacks sanctions.
