Motorola to announce advance in chips
Article Abstract:
Motorola has managed to deposit super-semiconductors gallium arsenide and indium phosphide onto silicon. Semiconductor designers may license this breakthrough research to invent higher-speed, cheaper and more efficient chips. Motorola will have the chips in their cell phones by next year. The company is also generous with its research, even to competitors in a hope to boost the sagging industry. Motorola came to the discovery through an accident and believes that the process can be applied to other materials. Analysts' response has been reserved, albeit enthusiastic.

Intel logs 80% rise in net and big revenue growth
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp.'s second-quarter earnings set a record, at $3.14 billion in the quarter ended June 30, a jump of 80 percent from $1.75 billion in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose 23 percent, to $8.30 billion. The higher profits for the second quarter reflect $2.1 billion form its sale of investments in Micron Technology and other firms. Some analysts worry that investment earnings can vary sharply between quarters. Intel expects that its investment income will fall back down to $800 million in the third quarter.

I.B.M. invests to profit from latest chips
Article Abstract:
IBM plans to open a new East Fishkill, NY semiconductor factory in 2003. Although the plan will put IBM a year behind NEC and Intel, it will allow the company to begin manufacturing microprocessors on 12 rather than eight-inch silicon wafers. The larger wafers will allow for the development of hundreds more chips per wafer.
