Motorola's losses are worse than expected

Motorola registered a loss of $206 million, or 9 cents per share, during 1st qtr 2001, its first quarterly loss ever in more than 15 years. During the year-ago period, Motorola reported a net income of $481 million, or 21 cents per share. The Schaumberg-based company had one-time charges of 279 million, compared with $39 million in 2000. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call were expecting Motorola to post a quarterly loss of just 7 cents per share.

Wireless industry takes hit from economic woes
