Vivendi confirms Seagram purchase

Vivendi of France will acquire Seagram for over $34 billion. The move, which has received the approval of company investors, will make the water and media firm a global player in the theme park, TV, movie and music fields. The purchase will result in the formation of Vivendi Universal, an old and new media company that will have annual revenues of about $55 billion. The new company is also expected to sell Seagram's liquor operations.

Murdoch may have backing for Primestar
Article Abstract:
News Corp.'s Rupert Murdoch's $700-million bid to purchase Primestar is said to have received the support of Canal Plus of Paris, France. Murdoch, News Corp.'s CEO, is negotiating the purchase of the satellite broadcast company from Comcast, Cox and Time Warner and is said to be close to securing as much as $500 million from Canal Plus in exchange for a 10%-stake in Primestar. The deal, which needs the permission of the US Justice Department, will leave News Corp. with the ownership of about 40% of Primestar.
