Music: Misunderstanding Gershwin

George Gershwin is misunderstood by both classical composers and performers. He had ample classical music education, but his harmonic innovations tried to bring jazz into the classical concert hall. His music should be performed in a freer, jazzier way, much less literallistically than modern symphonies attempt.

Redeeming the rake

Stravinsky's 'The Rake's Progress' is a difficult opera to love, but it redeems itself in its moving third act. The opera contains elements from the personal lives of the composer and the librettists, W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman.
