Naberhood watch: with buildings creating more greenhouse gases than vehicles, a new government plan that rates houses for environmental impact is not such a bad idea, reports Anne Susskind
Article Abstract:
The Australian government is working on a plan to rate homes for environmental impact with a star system that will judge houses regarding biodiversity, embodied energy, energy consumption, water consumption, indoor air quality, resource efficiency, location and transport, waste management, and food production. Dubbed NABERS, or the National Australian Building Environmental Rating System, the plan hopes to assess the environmental impact of homes while encouraging the solving of their environmental shortcomings.

Scale models
Article Abstract:
Successful Australian architects Richard Leplastrier and Glenn Murcutt work closely with clients on simple, modest projects. Leplastrier, winner of the 1999 Royal Australian Institute of Architects' gold medal, works alone on his projects, occasionally collaborating with one or two other architects. Other contenders for architectural prizes work on grand projects with large staffs.
