Architects rarely stoop to using metaphors to describe their own buildings, or pinning down their inspirations, but they are not always as reticent when it comes to the work of rivals. When two of the world's more respected architecture commentators, Charles Jencks and Deyan Sudjic, exchanged opinions about the future of the icon, the dramatic, admirable construction, the metaphors became the highlight of the debate.

This new trend is a response to city growth which has increased the number of freeways through suburban and urban communities.
