Stocks start decimal trade today
Article Abstract:
The New York Stock Exchange will begin trading all stocks on Jan 29, 2001 in dollars and cents instead of fractions. The change will put a lot of strain on trading professionals on the exchange floor who trade about $44 billion in stocks daily and are used to calling out bids at a machine-gun pace in 1/16th increments. Trading for some of the exchange's 3,500 stocks may also be slower and more volatile for the first few days as floor brokers and specialists try to adjust to the new spreads between what buyers and sellers are willing to pay.
