New model of a classic printer
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard Co introduces the LaserJet IIIP, a low-cost laser printer. The LaserJet IIIP lists for $1,595, which could mean a discounted retail price of about $1,100. The IIP is less expensive - the discounted price of a IIP is about $850 - so the IIP remains the choice for users who want laser quality at the lowest price. However, the IIIP now offers an affordable option that can provide more sophisticated text and graphics. According to Marc O. Boer, a printer industry analyst with BIS Strategic Decisions Inc, Norwell, MA, the IIIP is suited to business uses and to the home office. The IIIP incorporates HP's proprietary Resolution Enhancement Technology, so that jagged edges are removed, which is especially apparent when a user works with larger type sizes or with graphics. Hewlett-Packard also introduces the HP LaserJet Fax, which allows a LaserJet to receive and print facsimile documents on plain paper. The LaserJet Fax lists for $1,895.

Heir apparent in printer dynasty
Article Abstract:
HP's Laserjet III computer printer offers improved quality, faster printing of charts and full compatibility with Laserjet II at a cost of $2,399. The new printer replaces the Laserjet II, which is the most widely used laser printer on the market. Laserjet III uses HP Resolution Enhancement, which varies the size and alignment of the dots that make up a printed character. That variance gives the impression of producing more than the standard 300 dots per inch. The implication of more dots smooths out the jagged edges and stairstep appearance that some computer printers can produce. LaserJet III has a new page-description language, PCL-5, which should be compatible with most word processing software, including Microsoft Word, Wordstar and Pagemaker; it will not require special software. Laserjet III has 22 built-in fonts, eight of which are scalable. The remaining fonts are bit-mapped.

Kodak combines a network printer with a copier; fluent in several computer languages, it will work with PC's and Macintoshes
Article Abstract:
Eastman Kodak Company introduces two new products that combine photocopying capabilities with high-speed, network-ready computer printers. The $5,495 Kodak Ektaplus 7016 can produce 16-page-a-minute, laser-quality output from a variety of computers, including IBM and compatible microcomputers, as well as Apple Macintoshes. The Ektaplus can also handle input from up to four different types of networks, and it can automatically convert a variety of page description languages, including HP-PCL, HP-GL, Epson FX-80, Diablo 630, IBM Proprinter and an option for Postscript. The Ektaplus 7016PS includes an Adobe Postscript co-processor with an additional 4-Mbytes of memory and a Motorola 68020 microprocessor. The printer/copiers use LED technology instead of laser technology to achieve high-quality output.
