Many major Canadian city governments are suing telecommunications and cable television companies in federal appeals court over a new rule that favors such companies in installing underground telecom systems. City engineers are arguing that telecom services providers are not offering adequate compensation for tearing up their streets.

Ottawa to defer tax gains for Nortel spinoff

Montreal, Que.-based BCE Inc., which is led by president and chief executive officer Jean Monty, has spun off Brampton, Ont.-based Nortel Networks Corp. BCE has announced that Canada Revenue is expected to complete the spin off without incurring a major capital tax revenue charge.
