The Liberal Party's Aug 1995 caucus in Ottawa was a relatively low-key affair, but the potentially vexing issue of unemployment insurance reform raised a stir. Human Resources Minister Lloyd Axworthy will propose benefit cuts in fall 1995, but some party back-benchers are wary of Axworthy's plan.

Canada's Tories, who must rebuild their party in the wake of a cataclysmic electoral defeat in 1993, will hold their 1995 convention in May to ratify Jean Charest as leader. Charest's rebuilding effort has not yet borne fruit, but the Conservatives' provincial party structure remains sound.
