Justice, airline square off soon

Northwest Airlines and the US Justice Dept are embroiled in a court fight over airline mergers. The agency has filed an antitrust suit against Northwest after it gained a controlling interest in Continental as part of a marketing alliance that includes sharing frequent-flier programs. The case has serious implications for the proposed United Airlines-US Airways merger and other successive mergers.

Northwest offers to sell shares of Continental to appease Justice
Article Abstract:
Northwest Airlines has announced that it is selling its controlling interest in Continental Airlines. The announcement came after the airlines reached a tentative settlement with the Justice Dept which is reviewing their merger. Northwest is selling most of its stake in Continental for $450 million in cash. The deal is a victory for consumers since it will ensue that Northwest and Continental will remain independent competitors.

Two Kelleher deputies to succeed him
Article Abstract:
Southwest Airlines CEO Herb Kelleher has announced that he wil be succeeded by two longtime deputies, James Parker and Colleen Barrett. Parker, the airline's vice president and general counsel, will take over as chief executive and vice chairman while Barrett, executive vice president for customers, will become president and chief operating officer. Both will join the board on the airline's 30th anniversary on Jun 19, 2001. Kelleher will keep the post of chairman for three more years.
