Retailers, dot-coms team up
Article Abstract:
A number of traditional retailers are finding the establishment of marketing alliances, in lieu of an outright acquisition, with established electronic commerce companies more convenient than putting up their own Web sites. Some examples of the trend include Nordstrom's investment of about $23 million into Streamline.com, Kenko's alliance with America Online, Federated Department Stores' $1.7-billion purchase of Fingerhut and Ace Hardware's $5.3-million payment for a 25% stake in OurHouse.com.

Not a very merry season so far for nation's retailers
Article Abstract:
Holiday retailers are experiencing soft sales for the third-consecutive week of the five-week season which began on the Thanksgiving weekend. The sudden slowdown leaves retailers concerned that they will be left with acres of unsold goods, a potential inventory disaster. Losses n invetory can wreck the crucial 4th qtr, when retailers attain about a third of their annual sales. A large inventory backlog could create havoc with profits. To add to slow sales are winter storms along the East Coast and in the Midwest that may keep shoppers out of stores.

Retailers ring up happy New Year
Article Abstract:
Celeberations to usher in the new millennium have boosted the sales of retail stores, with consumers buying everything from evening wear to champagne glasses with '2000' at the stems. The Christmas of 1999 has been touted as one of the best of the decade and of the century, according to Davenport retail analyst Kenneth Glassman. Electronic commerce sales have also been strong and many online merchants found their servers to be inadequate to the rise in Web visitors.
