OMERS sees $1-billion deficit by year-end as investments hit: Richer benefit payouts cited as one reason

The Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board had stated that it is experiencing a $1-billion deficit by the end of 2004 with the pension plan's last revaluation. The rapid decline is the result of past benefit enhancements, the collapse of values in equity markets and a contribution holiday that the fund was required to take by regulation because of the size of its surplus.
