Onex proposal finds favour in Ottawa
Article Abstract:
The proposal by Onex Corp to acquire and merge Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International Ltd has gained the support of Canada's federal government. Ottawa has earlier adopted a hands-off policy but expressed concerns about the antitakeover defense strategies being launched by Air Canada such as delaying the shareholder meeting on the proposal until Jan 7, 2000. The goverment suspended competition rules for the airlines industry for 90 days to allow the deal to push through.
