Ontario rejects duty proposal

The United States, which has offered to end its 32% duty on Canadian softwood lumber products, was rebuffed by the Canadian government. Canada, which is under pressure to launch legal action to gain unrestricted access to the $30 billion softwood lumber market in the U.S., will keep its price structure in place during negotiations.

Panel slams U.S. on lumber
Article Abstract:
Pierre Pettigrew, Canada's Trade Minister, predicts victory in the country's trade war with the United States over lumber. Mr. Pettigrew said that a NAFTA committee's recent ruling against U.S. lumber duties on Canadian lumber imports is a step toward ending the disagreement.
