Apple rewards Jobs for firm's success

Apple Computer Inc's board of directors has approved an option for 10 million shares and a $40-million jet to CEO Steve Jobs. The move came as the computer maker registered its ninth-consecutive profitable quarter with Jobs as CEO. Apple, which posted a $178-million operating profit for 1st qtr 2000, has increased its market value to more than $16 billion from only under $2 billion when Jobs took the CEO position for $1 per year in 1997.

Could Linux outdo Windows?
Article Abstract:
Linux is turning out to be a viable alternative to Microsoft Corp's Windows operating system for its low cost and flexibility. A number of Web site start-ups and computer firms are embracing the operating system, which is currently present in 31% of all Web servers. Notwithstanding its own set of limitations, the operating system managed to solicit the support of such companies as IBM, Sun Microsystems, Dell Computer and Intel, which are launching products based on Linux.

Optics companies cash in on the speed of light
Article Abstract:
Several manufacturers of optoelectronic devices are reaping huge profits by tapping into the optical-networking market. These companies have developed technologies that allow large amounts of Internet, video and voice signals to travel across fiber-optic lines at the speed of light. Since optical devices make the Internet more faster and reliable, the demand for these products is expected to get even hotter as the Internet becomes an indispensable tool in the future.
