Breakup hangs over Microsoft stock
Article Abstract:
Financial analysts are divided on whether a government proposal to split up Microsoft along its various product lines would help or hurt investors. JP Morgan and Co analyst William Epifanio opined that the possibility of a breakup would prompt many investors to sell out their stock because Microsoft would lose its ability to bundle products. Some analysts say a breakup would boost the value of the separate companies especially the Internet assets.

Microsoft responds to judge's findings
Article Abstract:
Microsoft has formally responded to a federal judge's findings that the software giant is a monopoly. Some experts say the response could convince the judge to deliver a lighter punishment, although most experts believe that it is almost certain that the judge will find Microsoft's actions to be in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The response cited competing legal standards and a 1998 appeals court ruling to dispute the judge's findings.

New markets pose challenge for enforcement of breakup
Article Abstract:
Some experts say that the government's proposal to break up software giant Microsoft Corp contains enough loopholes that could give the company an unfair boost in exponentially growing, new markets. The proposed split would not, for example, stop Microsoft from linking personal computers and servers because operating systems for both would be part of an operating systems company. A second company could theoretically house Microsoft's office applications and Internet sites. Furthermore, the government has not addressed the server market in its proposed curbs on Microsoft's conduct.
