Ottawa intervenes in RIM patent infringement battle
Article Abstract:
The federal government has intervened in a high-stakes patent infringement battle between Research In Motion (RIM) Inc. and a US company, claiming a United States court ruling against the creator of the iconic BlackBerry Communications device threatens to chill innovation by Canadian firms. For Ottawa the issue is about extraterritoriality and the possible setting of precedent for other Canadian companies operating in the United States rather than RIM's own fight.
