Ottawa is planning to put severe restrictions on the kind of health claims that food companies are able to make even as the industry gears up to cash in on the latest weight loss mantra. The soaring popularity of diets such as the Atkins plan and the South Beach regime has led to an explosion of low-carb products in the United States.

Lawsuits may force stricter reserve rules on oil firms

According to senior manager Phillip Chan of petroleum engineering of North American operations at Talisman Energy Incorporation, tighter standards for measuring and disclosing reserves will be set in 2004. This is to check the frauds that some oil companies resort to in disclosing their exact reserves.
