The overseas critics love Catherine Rey's work but few in Australia have read her books since they are in French and her latest novel which has is translated in English as The Spruiker's Tale is winner of the prestigious Prix de la Societe des Gens de Lettres award. Rey hates conventional narratives and the story set in a dying town called Tomton in the Australian outback is a spellbinding razzmatazz of grotesque circus images, consisting of a trapeze artist, a ringmaster and an acrobat.
