IRAQIS PRESS U.S. FOR COMPROMISE TO GAIN SELF-RULE
Article Abstract:
Iraqi Governing Council chairman Adnan Pachachi is pressing the US and the Bush administration to allow elections by the end of 2004. The Council wants to augment the plan and expand the US handpicked government as the Council prepares for direct elections. The influential Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is beginning to demonstrate his political influence by organizing demonstrations and leading a forceful opposition to the US political strategy for Iraq.
