Pearson gains $34-million for Post stake

Pearson PLC, a publisher headquartered in London, UK, reported that it sold a 20% interest in the Financial Post business newspaper in a deal valued at C$34 million. Pearson, the publisher of Financial Times, had co-owned the business newspaper with 80% owner Sun Media Corp. in Toronto. The Financial Post was sold to Southam Inc. in a deal valued at approximately C$160 million for Sun Media's stake in the company. The deal also involved stock swap and an additional C$150 million in cash for four Southam-owned daily newspapers in southern Ontario.

Call-Net tries to quash Fonorola pill

Article Abstract:

Call-Net Enterprises Inc. is seeking the help of securities regulators in removing the poison pill that is blocking its acquisition bid for Fonorola Inc. Fonorola's poison pill is triggered when anyone acquires more than 20% of the company. Call-Net officials stated that they are filling a joint application with the Quebec and Ontario securities commissions both in Canada to have Fonorola's rights plan lifted. Officials also cited that Fonorola shareholders should not be prevented from considering the acquisition offer.
