Pension debate is heating up
Article Abstract:
IBM's decision to change its tradition pension plan to a cash-balance plan is encountering strong opposition from its employees who are increasing their efforts to unionize. While there are supporters of the cash balance plan, those opposed to it say it violates age-discrimination laws since midcareer employees lose 20% to 50% of their planned retirement benefits. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee are studying the implications and effects of cash-balance pension plans.
