Phone companies work to simplify billing

Telephone companies, in cooperation with the United States Federal Communications Commission, are working to simplify phone bills to help consumers understand them. The firms believe that simplification of the bills is needed as phone bills have become larger because of the increased use of telephones and the impact of the Internet. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that the average household spent $830 on telecommunication in 1998, up from $325 in 1980.

Sprint chief: deal's in trouble

Sprint Corp CEO William Esrey admitted that his company and WorldCom may not be able to surmount the regulatory obstacles which could prevent the completion of their proposed $115 billion merger. Esrey cited the Justice Dept's recommendation that their merger should be opposed. US and EU regulators are wary of the merged firm's capacity in the Internet and long-distance businesses. Esrey justified the merger as procompetitive since their competitors are also merging.

Phone workers strike Verizon, but talks are making progress

Verizon Communications has been hit by a strike of 85,000 customer-service workers and technicians affiliated with the Communications Workers of America. The key issues raised by the strikers include wages and benefits, working conditions for customer-service employees, forced transfers and contracting of work to non-union firms. The primary issue highlighted by the union is its access to jobs in the fast-growing wireless division.
