Mattel CEO a casualty of poor results

Toymaker Mattel Inc has announced that CEO Jill Barad has resigned on Feb 3, 2000. The resignation came after Mattel posted a loss of $18.4 million, or 4 cents a share, in the 4th qtr 1999 amidst one of the largest toy- buying seasons. Mattell attributed the poor performance to the $183- million loss by The Learning Company, a software developer bought by Mattelin 1999. Barad had been CEO for three years. Mattel has named William Rollnick as acting chairman and Ronald Loeb as acting CEO.

Poor Xerox earnings lead to firing of CEO
Article Abstract:
Xerox Corp dismissed CEO Richard Thoman on May 11, 2000 after only 13 months in office. Thoman was recruited from IBM where he was CFO under Lou Gerstner. When he came to Xerox, the company's shares were more than $70. As of May 11, its price had plummeted to $25.50. Chmn Paul Allaire was reappointed CEO and will likely serve in that position for two years. Anne Mulcahy is expected to be next in line to run Xerox when she was promoted to president and COO.

Hewlett-Packard Co (H-P) new CEO Carleton Fiorina will soon unveil her vision that will take the company to new heights. The 44-year-old Fiorina quit as president of Lucent Technologies' $20-billion Global Service Provider Business to be H-P's chief. Although she brushed asides questions regarding her position as the most highly-placed woman in the technology industry, Fiorina will be closely watched on how she will oversee H-P's 123,000 employees and further grow its $47-billion in annual revenue.
