Quaint Sobeys look to touch national grocery scene

Empire Company Ltd., the Stellarton, Nova Scotia-based food distributor giant controlled by the Sobey family, continues to show strong growth despite an increasingly competitive grocery market. In the Sobey family's recent pursuits, it sought to purchase Toronto, Ontario-based Oshawa Group Ltd. from the Wolfe family. Empire Chairman Donald Sobey and David Sobey, president of the Sobeys grocery division, wrote to the Wolfe family to communicate their interest to merge with Oshawa Group and establish a formidable national competitor in the Canadian food distribution industry. Sobey's Empire, the leading grocery chain in Atlantic Canada, has diversified to operate movie theaters, bottle soft drinks and own food two food wholesalers. Empire generates an annual revenue of C$3.3 billion.

Nova Scotia to claim first call on gas liquids
Article Abstract:
The Nova Scotia government said it would pass legislation to give it the first dibs on natural gas liquids discovered offshore. The proposed legislation will require all offshore energy projects to supply gas liquids to support the province's fledgling petrochemical industry. The announcement appeared to be a surprise to the Sable Offshore Energy Project, which is expected to start production in fall 1999.

N.S. claims trademark on Bluenose
Article Abstract:
The government of Nova Scotia will request intervenor status from the Nova Scotia Supreme Court in a dispute over the trademark rights to the famous Bluenose II fishing vessel. The Bluenose II is a replica of the vessel that raced in international sailing competitions during the 1930's.
