Peter Costigan, newly elected as lord mayor for Melbourne, Australia, regards the concepts of "indigenous" and "reconciliation" as divisive. The first term is often assumed to refer to Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, yet actually means anyone born in Australia. "Reconciliation" is too ambiguous to be useful.
