Article Abstract:
A fresh concern that emerged, with oil prices at a record high of nearly US $44 a barrel on 2 August 2004, was that highly speculative buyers were driving oil so high, so fast that there would be an all-out rout when prices finally begin to fall. The potential for such a scenario and the measures taken by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to prevent it are discussed.
