Barrick Gold Corp CEO Peter Munk used his connections with such influential figures as George Bush and Indonesian Pres Suharto to win a 67.5% stake in the Busang gold mine. However, the agreement has not been finalized, and Bre-X Minerals or the Indonesian government may usurp some of Barrick's stake.

Munk used his connections with Indonesian officials to get a lucrative gold mining contract for his firm Barrick Gold Corp. Under the terms of the tentative agreement Barrick will get 75% of the deal and Bre-X, which staked the find, will get 25%. The inside story of the deal is presented.

Gregory Chorny and other Bre-X Minerals stockholders have filed a lawsuit against Barrick Gold Corp for usurping the controlling interest in the Busang gold deposit. The Indonesian government is expected to rule on the deal by Feb 17, 1997. Details of the dispute are given.
